So lately, with the diminishing battery life of my Kodak Z740, I've been looking at cameras. Today I discovered one by Canon that caught my eye. The SX20 IS is a 12mp camera just shy of the DSLR Rebels. It features a super zoom of 20x and a flip-out LCD. I will let the pictures speak for the rest of it. $359 on Amazon

ReplyDeleteThat looks nice with optical zoom. Alternatively you could buy a dslr used from KEH.com for very cheap and get something with probably better image quality still despite its relic status. For example, the 10d has been around the block a few times, you can buy the body alone for a little over 200 bucks, get a really good but inexpensive 50mm lens for another 100 or a different cheap lens for around the same price and make images that will still look great blown up. The megapixel count isn't everything. Sorry if this works to confuse something that you may be set on already, but its food for thought.
ReplyDeleteThe cons are that with a 10d, you lose video capabilities. The pros are that it will be more sophisticated (light meter, af speed, frames per second rate, etc) Also, this point and shoot doesn't save to RAW which as it sounds, is the equivalent of an uncompressed/unaltered digital negative. RAW files are easier to work with in photoshop or other programs because you can set things like white balance in post-shoot, but with jpeg, that stuff gets slightly more tricky and there is literally less information in the photo to work with.
Alas, I digress, its all what you want to do with a camera. This one you posted will take nice shots I'm sure but I'm just giving you suggestions if you think you might just explode with interest in photography on the cheap and if you still want to control things like aperture and shutter speed yourself, nothing beats a dslr. If not, this camera is a helluva lot better than the one I started on.
